I picked up this book as a Kindle Freebie quite a while ago because the synopsis sounded a lot like one of Dean Koontz' early works. Having set the bar this high in my mind, I procrastinated on reading it because surely I would have to be disappointed. I am happy to report that this book met and surpassed all of my expectations. This is how horror is done- no gore, no chainsaws, no vampires- just slow, painstaking buildup of dread and foreboding, as each revelation leads to the conclusion that is both surprising and inevitable. I don't normally care much for horror because, with some notable exceptions, the genre is by definition nihilistic, feeding off our fears and insecurities and leaving us usually even more unsettled at the end. This book takes a different path. It starts at a dark place, with our nominal protagonist, as unlikable as they come, drowning his life in whiskey and destroying his marriage. Then it gets darker; and darker still, as more pieces of the puzzle fall into place. But then, something miraculous happens- everything clicks together and becomes a thing of beauty- tragic, messy, but beauty nevertheless. It has been quite a while, in fact, since I came across such a perfect ending. If this were a movie, I would recommend seeing it on opening day so as not to have the plot twists given out to you by overly eager reviewers. Since this is a book, you can enjoy it any time, but I would not recommend delaying it much longer- this one is something special.Product details

I liked the story line, but being the impatient person I am I had to keep myself from skipping chapters. It took a while to get the plot s sorted out,as a matter of fact, l almost gave up. I am glad that I didn't, this book has a lot of twists and turns but is well worth the reading. It is most definitely a supernatural thriller and I would recommend it.
Chris Ward writes great psychological thrillers. If you like books that make you think, you will love this book. Elaine
Light and dark. Anger and love. Resentment, self-destruction, and redemption. This book covers all of this and more. I wish I was a more eloquent writer so I could adequately express how awesome this book is. The plot had me up reading until I literally could not keep my eyes open. Several nights in a row I had 5 hours or less sleep, making teaching high school math exceedingly challenging. The writing was polished, sometimes with a soft glow but more often with images sharp enough to cut. This book is highly recommended.
I don't know how many times during this reading that I wanted to throw this book to the side and quit. I hated the characters at times, and didn't like where the story seemed to be going. But isn't that how a good book is supposed to make you feel?
This is a good book. Ward's ability to twist and turn the plot is remarkable. Just when I thought I had things figured out and knew whose side I was on, this author took me to a totally different place. It's twisted, intriguing, and emotionally stabbing. Definitely worth the read.
The story brings you into the mysterious family and their struggles with their past, but you never quite get to know the hows and whys, even by the end. You are left trying to piece together the story, at least I was.
I've read a few of Chris Ward's short stories and I follow his blog, so I was keen to read one of his novels.
I expected deeply-flawed and intriguing characters, a strong plot, and a killer finale, which I got - along with a surprising empathy towards some of the darker characters when I closed the book. Chris is very good at layering characters' emotions, and each character's voice speaks clearly and consistently throughout the story.
My only real criticism is actually about the blurb it doesn't introduce other important characters in the book, or describe the paranormal elements to the (potential) reader.
This book will surprise you, not many indie authors can structure a multiple POV story with alternating time periods this well. The author's experience certainly shines through.

This was perhaps the most abstract paranormal book I have ever read. While the story starts with lots of references to paranormal activities, forthcoming details are sketchy enough to keep the reader guessing and hoping to find out more detail.
The author, Chris Ward, keeps the reader totally engaged and a little frustrated at the rate of divulgence with details that add to the paranormal aspect of the story.
The characters in this bizarre novel are somewhat believable with the lead character (Matthew Cassidy) being rather difficult to relate to; his wife (Rachel Cassidy) presents a likable and easy to relate to personality.
Lovers of mystery and paranormal novels will find this book entertaining, engaging, at times frustrating, and also rather fascinatingly peculiar.
